Aviation Cocktail


Classic sour gin cocktails such as the Aviation cocktail are a great way for people to start really enjoying gin, especially those who say they aren’t fans or always opt for vodka based cocktails. This cocktail is a strong gin cocktail and has a beautiful colour to it, with a straight forward method for making you just need to make sure you have all of the ingredients on hand. Created in New York in the early 1990’s by a bartender by the name of Hugo Ensslin. Some recipes will omit the crème de violette which changes the colour and flavour slightly.
Ingredients (serves 1)


  • 50ml of Gin
  • 25ml of Maraschino Liqueur
  • 35ml of Lemon Juice
  • 12ml of Creme de Violette
  • Optional: edible violet as a garnish


  • Get your cocktail shaker and combine all ingredients and fill with ice
  • Shake well until it’s nice and chilled
  • Strain the cocktail into your favourite glass and garnish with the edible violet
